Friday Feb 27th, 2004 - Former "Alice" designs
new Sauk County Fair logo

Under the banner of "Food, Family, Fun," the Sauk County Agricultural
Society today unveiled its official logo for the 150th annual Sauk County
Fair July 6-11, 2004, at the fairgrounds in Baraboo. A former Alice in
Dairyland from Sauk County oversaw the design of the new logo.
"The Fair board wanted an image that showed the warm, fuzzy feel of the
traditional events - the youth and adults with their projects such as
animals, crafts, cooking, sewing, pies, cake-decorating, jams and jellies
and so much more," said former Alice in Dairyland Rebecca Powell Marx.
Marx grew up in Baraboo, relishing summer's arrival and the Sauk County
Fair. She and her two sisters spent days there, riding the Tilt-O-Whirl,
walking the midway, guessing who would win the Fairest of the Fair title,
and just hanging out like kids have done for years. She graduated from
Baraboo High School in 1974 and attended the University of
Wisconsin-Madison to study public relations and marketing.
After graduation, she earned the 1979 Alice in Dairyland title. Alice is a
public relations professional working for the Wisconsin Department of
Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. She travels the world to
promote Wisconsin products to audiences of all ages, educating the media,
youth and civic groups about the many facets of the state's agricultural
industry.
Today, Marx and her family own an award-winning advertising, marketing and
public relations company based in Milwaukee. Marx Creative works with
regional and national clients through full-service television and audio
production studios, video-editing suites, extensive print graphics and
design services, and marketing ideas that make people think, yet yield
results for clients, she explains. That gets her back to talking about the
Fair logo.
"While wanting to capture the traditions of the Fair, the board also
wanted an image that showed the excitement and energy of its other events
- rides, live entertainment, demo derbies. I think the image, along with
the new slogan adopted by the Fair board, really give the right marketing
messages," Marx says.
Marx Creative donated the logo design. It will be used in all Fair
advertising and promotions, which are being handled this year by a group
of Sauk County volunteer communicators from agricultural and
marketing/public relations businesses. Two of those volunteers include
local Marx Creative representatives Nichelle Martin and Pamela Karg, both
of Baraboo.
Fair directors are finalizing the 2004 grandstand line-up, including the
potential appearance by a recent Grammy award-winner. They expect to
announce the schedule by mid-March. Demo derby, tractor pull and Open
Class rules are also being finalized and will be published in March. Or,
people can go the Fair board Web site at www.saukcountyfair.com.
